Shania Roban is a queer Makeup Artist, from Queens, New York. With roots stemming from Trinidad and Tobago, their work is informed by their vibrant culture, passion for self-preservation, and the creative expression that is synonymous with editorial makeup. Their work can be described as fluid, abstract, and ethereal. They reject the idea that makeup is frivolous, or must conform to binary societal stereotypes. They view makeup as a powerful tool for creative expression that anyone can utilize regardless of gender or complexion.
In Shania’s practice, makeup is a liberating tool that provides freedom of expression and fosters self-care in a world where it can be perceived as insignificant. They are interested in exploring editorial fashion-based projects that shy away from the norm. While also cultivating independent projects that use makeup as the focal point to deepen stories of one's experiences and identities.
“Caring for myself is not self-indulgence, it is self-preservation, and that is an act of political warfare ”
